आप ने कभी सोचा है कि साँप की जीभ दो भागों में बँटी क्यों होती है। वैज्ञानिक कारण तो यह है कि साँप अपनी जीभ से सूँघता है। इसको आप विस्तार से किसी जीवविज्ञान की पुस्तक में पढ़ सकते हैं। मैं यहाँ पर आपको पौराणिक कारण देने जा रहा हूँ। यह कल की प्रविष्टि का परिशिष्ट जैसा है:

जब सोम-रस को पीने के पहले साँप नहाने के लिए गए वे सोम-रस के पात्र को दर्भ नाम की घास पर रखा छोड़ गए थे। जब वै लौटे, तब तक सोम-रस का पात्र इन्द्र ले जा चुके थे किन्तु दर्भ पर कुछ बूँदें छलक गई थीं। साँपों ने उन बूँदों को चाटने का प्रयास किया। दर्भ घास नुकीली होती है। उसको चाटने से साँपों की जीभ फट गई। तब से सभी साँपों की जीभ दो भागों में फटी होती है।
